Step by Step Procedure of IVF Treatment

In-Vitro Fertilization also known as IVF is a process in which extracted eggs are fertilized manually with a sperm sample in the laboratory at specific environmental conditions. Later, the fertilized egg or embryo is placed in the uterus.

What are the Advantages of IVF Treatment?

  • Provide a successful reproduction
  • Give hope to infertile people
  • Help same-sex couples and single women
  • Helps in diagnosing fertilization problems
  • Detect inherent diseases
  • Encourages donation of eggs or sperm
  • Diagnose chromosomal disorders
IVF is ideal for patients who have:
  • Low male sperm motility
  • Damaged or blocked fallopian tubes
  • Low male sperm count
  • Women having ovulation disorders
  • Premature ovarian failure
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Unexplained infertility
  • Genetic disorder

IVF Procedure

IVF Treatment procedure is as follows:
  1. Fertility medicines are provided to stimulate egg production. The process needs multiple eggs. A transvaginal ultrasound is performed to analysis ovaries and  control hormonal levels
  2. A minor surgical process is performed to retrieved eggs. Medication is provided to reduce discomfort and pain.
  3. A sperm sample is taken from the male partner to combine with the eggs
  4. In the process of insemination, the eggs and sperm are attached and perform the fertilization in laboratory conditions.  After fertilization, fertilized eggs are considered as embryos.
  5. Further, the embryos are placed into the woman uterus to develop. Generally, this process is painless.

What is IUI treatment?

IUI (Intrauterine Insemination) treatment is mainly conducted with the aim of ensuring successful fertilisation by placing the sperm as closest to the eggs as possible in a woman’s body through artificial means. This is done by placing the extracted sperm directly into the body of the woman.

When is IUI performed?

IUI is mainly performed in the following cases: -
  • Due to male infertility conditions such as decreased sperm mobility or lower sperm concentration
  • In case of unexplained infertility
  • Due to cervical mucus issues resulting in hostile conditions of cervix where sperms fail to survive
  • Due to scar tissues in cervix that hinder movement of sperm into the uterus
  • Due to issues such as ejaculation dysfunction

How is IUI performed?

IUI treatment is usually performed after inducing an ovulation in the women with the help of ovulation stimulating medications. The treatment is initiated after detecting a surge in the Luteinising Hormone in the woman. The sperm extracted from the male partner is analysed for quality and the best are directly transferred into the woman’s uterus with the help of a catheter. This increases the probability for fertilisation.

Laparoscopic assisted Vaginal Hysterectomy (LAVH)

Vaginal Hysterectomy is a surgical procedure in which the uterus is removed through the vagina. In some conditions the fallopian tubes and ovaries are also removed.

The most common medical conditions for doing a hysterectomy includes the following:
  • Abnormal uterine bleeding
  • Benign fibroid tumors of the uterus
  • Genital prolapse
  • Chronic pelvic pain
  • Tumors
  • Uterine cancer which is uncommon

What is Laparoscopic assisted Vaginal Hysterectomy (LAVH)?

LAVH is a surgical procedure which uses a laparoscope to guide the removal of the uterus through the birth canal (Vagina). Whereas the procedure called a laparoscopic hysterectomy is performed by using a laparoscope and other instruments inserted through tiny abdominal incisions and the uterus, fallopian tubes etc are removed in tiny portions.

In some cases, a laparoscopic hysterectomy may be sufficient and in other cases and abdominal hysterectomy or a vaginal hysterectomy without a laparoscopy is indicated. The surgeon determines the procedure for the patient based upon the reason for hysterectomy and the condition of the patient.

How is LAHV performed?

In this procedure of LAVH slender metal tubes so called Trocars are inserted to provide passage for a laparoscope and other micro-surgical instruments by making several small incisions in the abdominal wall . The camera which is attached to the laparoscope provides images continuously and that is projected and magnified onto a television screen for viewing.
During LAVH, the uterus, the Fallopian tubes (if to be removed) is detached from the ligaments that attach it to other structures in the pelvis using the laparoscopic tools. Then the organs and tissue are removed through an incision made in the vagina.

The advantages of LAVH includes the following:

  • The incisions in LAVH are relatively small.
  • The scars, pain and recovery time are comparatively less than with an abdominal hysterectomy
  • LAVH is less physical traumatic
  • LAVH is feasible
  • Women generally recover faster after LAVH compared with women who have abdominal hysterectomy.

Managing Fertilisation With Advanced Infertility Treatment

Infertility can be quite disappointing for the affected couples. A majority of infertility cases are caused due to the lack of proper fertilisation and the irregularities that occur in the subsequent implantation of the embryo. With the developments in medical technology, these days, these can be overcome with ease.

http://fertility-clinic.in/artificial-insemination-ovarian-stimulation-and-intrauterine-insemination-iui/

IVF or In Vitro Fertilisation has been in the field of infertility treatment for quite some time. However with the latest advancements, they have been incorporated with a lot of techniques, to effectively increase the success rate and overall efficiency. They are now capable of addressing a wide range of fertilisation irregularities including insufficiency of eggs or sperm count.

Many practices of infertility treatments are still frowned upon by a margin of our society due to the lack of awareness associated with them. A clear understanding of the different types of artificial fertilisation procedures can be clearly imbibed with the video presented here. Take a few minutes to get to know, what is involved in the magic of fertilisation and implantation.

Addressing the various limitations of fertilisation

The various limitations of fertilisation, faced by couples affected by infertility can be addressed by the following techniques: -
In case of women with ovary disorders, who are unable to produce eggs, donor eggs can be used for fertilisation. Very low or no sperm count can be addressed by donor sperms preserved by methods of cryopreservation. Embryo adoption is another method used to address lack of successful fertilisation in couples.
Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection is a procedure used when the low sperm count or poor quality of sperm results in failed fertilisation. ICSI involves directly injecting the sperm into the egg during the fertilisation phase of IVF.

Artificial reproduction techniques are often deemed to be tough on pockets. However, with a slight alteration in the standard procedures, they can be customised to the needs of the patient. Some of these patient friendly techniques include Intravaginal Culture, Natural Cycle IVF, In Vitro Maturation and Transport IVF. They are explained in detail in the video.

Make Your Dream Of A Family Into Reality : IVF Treatment

IVF or In Vitro Fertilisation is nothing but ‘Conception in a Lab’. It is the scientific method of getting a woman impregnated when some kind of obstacle to conception exists and was not overcome by the other assisted reproduction methods. It works by getting the egg fertilized with a sperm under tested laboratory conditions in a test tube. The egg of the biological mother and the sperm are fused to form the embryo which is then implanted into the uterus via a catheter through the cervix. In advanced facilities, even the extra embryos formed can be preserved for future cycles.

The most common problems, found in women, associated with the inability to conceive are blocked fallopian tube and hormonal imbalances. IVF treatment can be a solution to this condition because the whole process is about hormonally controlling the ovulatory process.  In case of male infertility, whenever IUI or Intrauterine Insemination fails, IVF is required. IVF treatment might yield results for men with low sperm count or no sperm presence in the semen. IVF treatment complements ICSI in some cases, which is the process of direct injection of sperm into the egg. But, in this case, the possibility of fertilization is minuscule. Nevertheless, the chance of pregnancy is higher in the ICSI treatment than going without any treatment at all.

Procedure of IVF

The procedure involved depends on the kind of reproductive technology employed and whether donor sperms, eggs or embryos are involved. This may also be altered by another physical change of the body.

The process usually starts with the hyperstimulation of the ovary medication which can either be by the short protocol or the longer one. The latter deals with the use of fertility medications to induce the ovaries to develop multiple follicles. On the other hand, the longer protocol makes use of a GnRH to downregulate the pituitary-ovarian axis and after a week the ovary is hyperstimulated with FSH.

Once it reaches the desired state, egg retrieval would be scheduled. At the same time, semen would be retrieved. Fertilization would happen when the egg is placed in a special culture. The healthiest of the embryos is selected and is transferred to the uterus.

Srishti Hospital, with the able services of specialist doctors, is one of the best IVF treatment centers in Pondicherry. Srishti, as the very name suggests, is committed to ensuring that every couple gets the divine feeling of having a kid of their own.
